Description of project We started the run/walk in memory of a Kinette and friend who lost her battle with Cystic Fibrosis. Half of the proceeds go to CF Canada and the other to a local project (previous funds have gone to an outdoor fitness park and presently to the youth centre). We offer a 5 km walk or a 5km or 10km run, in the dark, throughout the paths of a beautiful park in our city. We mark the trails with signs, glow paint and milk jugs with heavy duty glow sticks. As well, we have volunteers in key points along the path that ensure participants are headed in the right direction and to cheer them on.We have other volunteers at the finish line and we borrow a large time clock, stop watches and safety patrol vest and signs from a local school. Each participant receives a headlamp, glow stick and other swag that we can get donated. We have a DJ playing music to make it a fun atmosphere, a BBQ for participants and volunteers after the run.As well, we have been fortunate enough to borrow 10 propane lanterns for each check point on the path (including the two water stations).
Service Hours 51-100
Did you leverage this project as a way to recruit new members? Yes
If you answered yes to the question above, please explain: We start promoting this event in the spring, with weekly (and more) Facebook posts up until the day of the event - with a few more posts and thank-yous after the event. Within these posts we promote both the Kinette and Kinsmen clubs; as well, we inform when their meetings are, a contact person and some general information on Kin.
How was this project promoted in your community? FB posts, sponsorship letters handed out to some local companies that we have made connections with as well as we try to get a few new companies on board every year. We put posters up throughout the city, the local radio stations and newspapers have done interviews/articles and helped us to promote the event.
What were some challenges you faced with this project, and how could your project be improved? There is a lot going on in Lloydminster so it is hard to get our event noticed. As well, the economy has been in a downturn and sponsorship are harder to come by. This year we are planning on putting out more posters to bring in more people.
What was the approximate budget for this project? Less than $1,000
If the project was a fundraiser, what were the sources of revenue for this project? The sources of revenue are the participants registration fee (currently $40/adult, $25 for 11-17 and ten and under free. As well, there is a small revenue from t-shirt sales and sales of glow sticks/paraphernalia. We have some sponsors that have donated money, others gift-in kind (DJ services, water, lanterns, helium tank, ATV's, BBQ and tents) or discounts on food & such.
If this was a fundraiser, how much money was raised (minus expenses)? $1,000-$5000
What were the expenses for this project? Expenses are rental of the city park building, food for participants and volunteers (hamburgers/hot dogs), headlamps for each volunteer, glow sticks for the path, balloons for release and to light the path.
Is there anything else you would like to share that would assist another club in duplicating this project in their community?
