The family announces with sorrow his death at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Thursday January 19, 2012 at the age of 70 years. Beloved husband of Marylin (Valley).
Michael was born in Montreal, Quebec on January 1, 1942. He moved to Ottawa to attend Carleton University graduating with a teaching degree and taught in Ottawa for many years. Michael was very adventurous and decided in 1969 to try the north for 6 months. The north won his heart and gave him a wonderful life. He taught at the Geraldton Composite High School through which he won the OSSTF Golden Jubilee Award and the Canadian Hilroy Fellowship for innovative teaching.
He was mayor of Geraldton and then Greenstone for 30 years. He realized to make things happen you could not remain insular but must be connected with other forms of government. His political accomplishments included presidencies of Thunder Bay Municipal League, NOMA (North Western Ontario Municipal Association), Association of Municipalities of Ontario, Vice-Chair of the Northern Heritage Committee, Chair of the Living Legacy Trust Fund and a member of Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement Pension Fund (OMERS).
While doing all this his social commitment was very strong. He was president of the Association for Community Living, and the North of Superior Mental Health Board; Chair of Finance of the Geraldton District Hospital Board; Chair of the Family Health Clinic and a member of the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons.
Michael always said his membership in Kin taught him life. He served the local club in every capacity including Deputy Governor, and received its highest honor, Life Membership in Kin. Marylin and he had a bucket list of things to do and places to visit. Together they traveled to almost every continent, making memories that brought them much laughter. Michael was predeceased by his parents, grandparents and father-in-law. He will be sadly missed by his huge family and many friends, but most of all by his friend and wife Marylin. Donations to the Municipality of Greenstone for the future Geraldton Museum would be appreciated.

Kinette Annette O’Connor died with Life Member Andy, her husband of 43 years, and children Leigh and Ryan holding her hands. Over 20 friends (mostly Kinsmen and Kinettes) were also in the room. Annette was born in
Fellow Kin,
With the passing of Kin Annette O'Connor, I would like to reflect on the spirit and inspiration that she exuded as she bravely battled cancer. The last few times that I had the pleasure of speaking with Annette, she always carried herself with a beaming smile, her head up high and determination in her heart. She would NOT allow cancer to stop her from living life with family and friends. Kin Annette has many distinctions as a member: Life Member, Past Deputy Governor, Club Treasurer and friend. I can guarantee that there is no one who can claim 38 years of PERFECT attendance with the exception of Kin Annette. In this she was rightfully proud. Let us not mourn the passing but celebrate the life of someone who was a leader and served her community with dignity and style. While she may be gone, she will always live in our hearts and memories.

Lisa Mitton
July 12, 2011
A Tribute to Lisa Mitton
Our club lost one of its most special and inspirational members, Lisa Mitton. At only 34 years old and having battled Cystic Fibrosis all her life, she closed her eyes for the last time and moved on to a place where she would never again suffer.
Knowing that she’s no longer suffering is the only comfort – not because we are left to grieve her death, but because of the person she was in our lives. I had never met anyone faced with so many physically draining battles, who still insisted on serving her community and fighting to raise money and awareness for the very cause she was battling.
Whether it was a yard sale or working our concession trailer, she would show up, bound and determined to make a difference that day. We tried to get her to sit down, take it easy, but she would have none of that. Those that know her best will wholeheartedly agree that when she has her mind set, it’s beyond useless to try to convince her differently. Her commitment to stubbornness, while frustrating I am sure for her family, is one of the traits that attracted me most to Lisa. I loved her feisty spirit and determination to tell her disease to “eff off”.
Knowing her stubborn streak, I had always expected her to be a fly-off-the-handle type, but she never displayed a temper. Even during the most heated discussions, her calm voice would never waiver. Rather than chirp in with a complaint or concern, she would always begin with, “Why don’t we just...” Needless to say, we as a club could always count on Lisa to bring a potential solution to the table. Some of her ideas were fantastic, some were meant to simplify things and some were just plain wacky, but I always admired that she committed to the solution, rather than the problem.
She almost always volunteered herself to be in charge of whatever idea she had, too.
How did this young woman become such an amazing person? The answer to that is easy – she was raised by some pretty remarkable people. It’s not often that you meet a family of four that are all members of Kin, but the Mitton family most certainly fits that statement. Lisa’s parents, Gary and Sandy, (Harriston Kinsmen and Palmerston & District Kinettes) are amazing individuals who don’t know the meaning of rest. I can’t imagine what they’ve endured, having both their daughters battle Cystic Fibrosis. They are the hardest workers I’ve ever met and they are wonderful people. Their hearts are astronimical in size and they make good use of them, serving their community and caring for the people in their lives.
Lisa had three passions that I was acutely aware of; her Ford Mustang, horror films and making a difference. I can say with supreme confidence that Lisa, you made a difference in our lives – more than you ever realized – and you will continue to be an inspiration to us all. We’ll continue on – you’d kick our butt if we didn’t – but will be forced to do so with less solutions at the table, fewer hands making light work, and without our most stubborn yet inspirational Kinette sister. We miss you already, Lisa, and know that wherever you are, we love you, because you made a difference, to us.
