Description of project Initially our goal was to give back to the community each month for the Kin Centennial year, however after Covid struck we decided to keep it going. In the end it ran for 20 months.
Service Hours 51-100
Did you leverage this project as a way to recruit new members? No
If you answered yes to the question above, please explain:
How was this project promoted in your community? This was a 'hidden' project. We would just show up at a business (RCMP, Fire Dept, Post Office, grocery store, pharmacists, medical clinic, daycares, hospital, long term care, EMT's, as many essential workers as we could, donated to the food bank, collected toys and gifts at Christmas and gave it to the Secret Santa committee, free tickets at the theater, helped another group set up for their fundraiser, bag groceries etc. During July and August each year we handed out ice cream treats and cold waters to people out at parks. Our goal was to surprise people with our help & goodies.
This was a great way to give back to our community without always asking them to support us.
What were some challenges you faced with this project, and how could your project be improved? Covid meant we couldn't just show up unannounced. We would call in advance and arrange a time we could come and if they preferred home baking individually wrapped or store bought. Sometimes this meant we had to do gift cards to local businesses.
What was the approximate budget for this project? Less than $1,000
If the project was a fundraiser, what were the sources of revenue for this project? The budget was $50 a month. Sometimes we were a little under and sometimes a little over but it all worked out to $50 a month.
A local grocery store caught wind of what we were doing and 'lost' the bill for the ice cream and water we had bought that summer.
If this was a fundraiser, how much money was raised (minus expenses)? Not Applicable
What were the expenses for this project? $50 a month
Is there anything else you would like to share that would assist another club in duplicating this project in their community? Look a head on the calendar to see if there is a special week- teachers week, nurses week, essential worker day ect. and surprise those workers during that time frame. Be ready with a camera, the shocked faces, smiles and sometimes tears made for great photos. We always got permission to take photos and post them to our FaceBook page.
