Description of project The 'Coldest Night of the Year' is a fund and awareness raising event held in many cities and towns across Canada. The Coldest Night of the Year is a family-friendly walk that raises money for charities serving hungry, homeless, and hurting people in communities.
The way we incorporated our NDK event was to sign up as the 'Food Team' with the organizers (In our case Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins, a group that we often partner with.) We came together as a club and cooked two types of chili - one with meat and one a vegan option. We also provided buns and cupcakes for the warm meal at the end of the walk; a mid-walk warming station with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and monster cookies was also provided. We had budgeted $1000 for our NDK event and only spent ~$450 on the food; we were able to donate the balance to the walk.
Service Hours 21-50
Did you leverage this project as a way to recruit new members? Yes
If you answered yes to the question above, please explain: We invited members of ACT to come out and help with the cooking the weekend before; we had potential members come and help with the service at the event as volunteers (one of which joined as a result).
How was this project promoted in your community? Facebook event - Kin Canada (Kinette Club of Timmins) branding as a 'sponsor'(food team)...we were in the paper and we were thanked on the ACT Facebook page.
What were some challenges you faced with this project, and how could your project be improved? Honestly, this was a seamless event. We plan to do it for years to come.
What was the approximate budget for this project? Less than $1,000
If the project was a fundraiser, what were the sources of revenue for this project?
If this was a fundraiser, how much money was raised (minus expenses)? Not Applicable
What were the expenses for this project? ~$450 (but we donated the balance of the budgeted $1000 for NDK to ACT to help with their fundraising efforts)
Is there anything else you would like to share that would assist another club in duplicating this project in their community? Check to see if there is a CNOY in their community....it typically falls on the same day as Kin's NDK. Offering to be the 'food team' increases visibility in the community and partnerships!
